UK Backs CuspAI’s $450M Series B for AI Materials Discovery

CAMBRIDGE, England: CuspAI raises $450 million in Series B funding, with the UK government participating in one of Europe’s largest deeptech rounds this year.

The July 20 raise vaults the Cambridge startup into the top tier of AI-for-science companies. Government money in a venture round is the notable detail. London has spent 2026 talking about sovereign AI capability; writing a check into a materials-discovery startup is what acting on it looks like.

CuspAI applies generative AI to designing new materials on demand. Co-founded by renowned AI researcher Max Welling, the company treats materials the way language models treat text: describe the properties you need, and the system proposes candidate structures. Target applications include carbon capture, where new porous materials could change the economics of pulling CO2 from the air.

The bet is that materials are the next frontier after biology. Isomorphic Labs raised $2.1 billion in May for AI drug design. Chai Discovery took $400 million this month with OpenAI co-investing. Materials sit one layer deeper in the physical economy: batteries, chips, catalysts, and construction all wait on chemistry breakthroughs that currently take decades.

The round also extends a striking run for British deeptech. UK startups raised $17 billion in the first half, with AI claiming 74% of it, and the country’s share of European deeptech funding nearly doubled. A $450 million Series B with state participation fits the pattern rather than breaking it.

One caveat belongs in the record. Full investor details beyond the government’s participation remain thinly reported so far, and CuspAI has not disclosed valuation. The scale of the round, though, puts European materials AI on the global map.
