GPT-6 Astra
New Delhi: OpenAI has launched GPT-6 Astra, its latest and most advanced AI model, with major improvements in computer use, software development, research, and complex professional tasks. The model was officially released on September 3, 2026.
GPT-6 Astra is designed to do more than answer questions. It can interact with computers and software to complete multi-step tasks, including working with documents, browsing the web, writing software, and handling professional workflows. This marks a major expansion of OpenAI’s focus on AI systems that can perform tasks with greater independence.
OpenAI President Greg Brockman has described Astra as a possible beginning of the “AGI era.” However, artificial general intelligence remains a debated concept, and the broader AI community has different views on whether current systems meet that standard.
The new model also brings significant cybersecurity capabilities. OpenAI says GPT-6 Astra is the first of its models to reach the Critical cybersecurity capability level under its Preparedness Framework. With the right tools and access, the model can identify previously unknown security flaws and develop ways to exploit them without step-by-step human guidance.
Because of these capabilities, OpenAI has introduced stronger safeguards around Astra. These include stricter isolation, encryption, monitoring, and additional safety evaluations before deployment.
The rollout has also faced some issues, with several paying ChatGPT users initially unable to access the new model. OpenAI later expanded access to additional paid users.
With GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI is positioning its latest model as a system that can not only generate information but also take action across digital environments. The launch is expected to further increase competition in the rapidly developing AI market.
