From $4.5bn to $15bn: AI Agent Startup Sierra Lands $950M Series E

SAN FRANCISCO: In the Series E investment round, AI Startup Sierra Technologies raises $950 million at a $15 billion valuation. Funding round, led by Tiger Global and Alphabet’s GV venture arm, came just eight months after its prior round.

Benchmark, Sequoia, and Greenoaks join the round alongside several other backers. The new valuation triples Sierra’s worth from its September funding at $4.5 billion.

Sierra was founded in early 2024 by Bret Taylor and former Google executive Clay Bavor. Taylor also chairs the OpenAI board. The startup builds tools that help organizations deploy AI agents for customer service workflows.

Sierra’s software now reaches nearly half the Fortune 50 enterprise market. The company generates $150 million in annual recurring revenue from its agent platform. Customers deploy Sierra agents to handle support tickets, subscription changes, and account modifications autonomously.

The platform centers on Agent SDK, a developer toolkit for building custom AI agents. The kit ships with prepackaged skills and connectors to external data sources. Agent Studio offers similar capabilities through a no-code interface for non-technical teams.

Sierra also sells Live Assistant, which generates real-time pointers for human support agents. More than 15 open-source and proprietary models power the underlying product portfolio.

“We’re building the platform layer for the agent economy,” Taylor says of the funding round.

The company may use proceeds to replace third-party models with custom algorithms. Several well-funded AI startups follow that path to reduce inference costs.

The round arrives during a fierce land grab for enterprise AI dollars. Anthropic this week launches 10 financial services agents targeting similar Fortune 500 buyers. Salesforce, Microsoft, and Google all push competing agent platforms into the market.

Sierra now ranks among the most valuable agent-focused AI startups globally.
