Stripe Moves Deeper Into AI, Buys OpenRouter for $7.5 Billion

New York: Payments giant Stripe announced on Wednesday that it has agreed to acquire OpenRouter, a startup that lets developers tap into hundreds of AI models through a single gateway. The move marks Stripe’s boldest step yet into the artificial intelligence infrastructure space, extending far beyond its roots in online payment processing.

Neither company has revealed the exact financial terms. However, a leading news platform, citing a person close to the matter, reported the price at roughly $7.5 billion, with $1.5 billion of that earmarked for OpenRouter’s founders. The number is striking given that OpenRouter was valued at just $1.3 billion less than three months earlier, when it closed a $113 million funding round. Stripe has not commented on the figures.

OpenRouter’s appeal among developers largely stems from its ability to route requests across both proprietary and open-weight AI models, including several originating from Chinese labs such as DeepSeek and Z.ai. These models have increasingly drawn attention for being more cost-effective than offerings from major U.S. players like OpenAI and Anthropic.

Explaining the rationale behind the acquisition, Stripe pointed to the challenge businesses face in managing AI spending as new models are released and repriced at a rapid clip. In a company blog post, Stripe said it had already been helping clients “optimize their token costs and route tokens efficiently.”

The deal comes at a moment when Stripe’s own valuation sits close to $160 billion, driven largely by its dominance in digital payments infrastructure used across a wide range of industries. This isn’t Stripe’s first major expansion beyond its core business either. It previously acquired stablecoin platform Bridge for $1.1 billion, a move that deepened its footprint in the crypto sector.

Stripe CEO Patrick Collison framed the acquisition as part of a broader push to support the economics of the AI industry. “Stripe is building the economic infrastructure for AI, and together with OpenRouter we’ll help businesses maximize profitability by routing their requests intelligently and spending their tokens efficiently,” he said in a statement.

For its part, OpenRouter framed the deal as consistent with its founding mission. In its own blog post, the company said it hopes the partnership will support “a healthy AI ecosystem where many models thrive, where AI neurodiversity is a strength, where a lab or an inference provider with a breakthrough can reach millions of developers, and where no single model becomes the default by inertia.”
