Paper Raises $34M as AI Coding Agents Redraw Design’s Borders

SAN FRANCISCO: Paper raises $34 million in Series A funding led by Accel and ICONIQ for a design tool built for the age of coding agents.

The July 23 round carries an unusually pointed angel list. Lovable co-founder Anton Osika invests. So do WorkOS founder Michael Grinich, Designer Fund, and working engineers and designers from Anthropic and OpenAI. The people building AI coding tools are backing the design layer that sits on top of them.

Traction came fast. Annual recurring revenue has grown 25x since Paper Desktop launched in early 2026. Customers already include Ramp, Vercel, Lovable, PostHog, Quartr, and Y Combinator. Total funding remains undisclosed.

The thesis is the interesting part. When AI agents write most of the code, the boundary between design and engineering stops being a wall and becomes a workflow. Paper positions itself in that gap: a place where taste, systems thinking, and coordination happen while agents handle implementation. Investors are betting the next durable platform sits between the two disciplines rather than inside either one.

The argument has a corollary that should worry incumbents. As code generation gets cheap, differentiation shifts to design judgment. That makes design infrastructure more strategic, not less. Figma built a giant business when designers handed mockups to engineers. Paper is betting that handoff itself is dying.

The competition is real on both flanks. Established design giants are bolting AI onto existing tools, and the AI-assisted creative market is crowded. Dessn raised $6 million in May for a similar production-code thesis.

Still, when Anthropic and OpenAI staff invest personally in a design tool, they are telling you something about where their own agents are heading.
