OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Work to Turn Goals Into Finished Work

SAN FRANCISCO: OpenAI has released ChatGPT Work, a new agent mode designed to take a goal from the user and deliver completed work without manual effort in between. The tool launched alongside GPT-5.6 and is being seen as OpenAI’s most direct push into the enterprise space so far.

With ChatGPT Work, users simply describe what they need and the agent handles the rest, producing spreadsheets, slide decks, documents, dashboards and even working web apps. OpenAI sums up the idea simply: it turns “a goal into completed work.” The release signals a clear shift from AI as a writing assistant to AI as an autonomous work executor, with businesses being the primary target.

Under the hood, GPT-5.6 provides the reasoning and Codex technology handles multi-step execution. The agent breaks large goals into tasks, works for hours at a stretch, asks for guidance when stuck, and requests approval before anything sensitive. Connectors reach Slack, Microsoft Teams, Gmail, Google Drive, SharePoint, Salesforce, and Notion. Typing “@” summons a specific app mid-conversation.

Distribution came in layers. Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users got Work first on web and mobile, with Plus and Business following. A rebuilt desktop app for Windows and Mac now merges Chat, Work, and Codex into one workspace on every plan, including Free. The old app lives on as ChatGPT Classic. A public beta called Sites converts finished work into shareable interactive pages.

The enterprise trimmings matter as much as the agent. Governance controls, real-time monitoring, and automated red-team security evaluations ship in the box. That checklist exists because the sale requires it: OpenAI is asking organizations to hand operational trust to software that acts on their systems for hours unsupervised.

The target is obvious. Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini own enterprise distribution, and Anthropic’s Claude Cowork runs the same long-task playbook. With both OpenAI and Anthropic circling IPOs, business contracts now matter more than consumer subscriptions. The agent era stopped being a demo. It’s now a line item.
