OpenAI Brings ChatGPT to Apple CarPlay

San Francisco: OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT on Apple CarPlay, allowing drivers to interact with the AI chatbot directly from their car’s dashboard. The feature lets users ask questions and get spoken answers without taking their hands off the wheel.

ChatGPT becomes the first major AI chatbot to officially launch on Apple CarPlay. The move comes shortly after Apple updated iOS to support third‑party voice‑based apps inside vehicles.

The CarPlay version of ChatGPT works entirely through voice conversation. Users can talk to the assistant just like they would with the voice mode in the mobile ChatGPT app. Apple’s rules do not allow AI apps to show text or images on the screen. As a result, ChatGPT responds only with spoken replies, keeping the focus on safe driving.

The interface is simple and limited. It includes an End button, a mute or unmute option, and a small history list of past voice conversations. But, unlike Siri, ChatGPT on CarPlay does not have a wake word. Drivers need to tap the ChatGPT icon on the CarPlay display to start a conversation.

The AI assistant can answer general questions, explain topics, or help with ideas. However, it cannot control any car features or perform phone actions like starting navigation or playing music.

To use ChatGPT on CarPlay, users must update their iPhone to iOS 26.4 and install the latest version of the ChatGPT app from the App Store. The phone must then be connected to a CarPlay‑enabled car.

While Apple users get this new feature, Android Auto users are left out for now. Google does not allow third‑party chatbots like ChatGPT on Android Auto, even though it supports its own Gemini assistant.

Experts note that this difference highlights how Apple and Google are taking very different approaches to in‑car AI. Apple is opening cautious access to third‑party assistants, while Google keeps tighter control.

The arrival of ChatGPT on CarPlay also shows how AI is moving beyond phones and computers into everyday driving experiences. Simple voice‑based AI help is becoming part of daily routines.

For now, the feature is designed mainly for conversation. Still, it marks an important first step for AI chatbots inside cars, especially for Apple users.

As in‑car technology evolves, the gap between Apple CarPlay and Android Auto may become even more noticeable. Whether Google opens its platform to third‑party AI, however, remains to be seen.

Recently, WhatsApp has announced that it also testing Apple CarPlay experience for iPhone users, aiming to make messaging and calling safer while driving. WhatsApp CarPlay experience is currently being tested with a small group of iOS beta users.
