Google Brings Veo 3.1, AI Avatars to Vids in Major Update

San Francisco: Google has rolled out a significant update to Vids, its AI-powered video creation tool within Google Workspace. The update brings Veo 3.1 video generation, prompt-directed avatars, YouTube export, and a new screen recording Chrome extension all in a single release.

Veo 3.1 is now integrated directly into the Vids editor. Users can generate eight-second video clips from within the tool without leaving the platform. All users receive 10 free generations per month. Google AI Ultra and Workspace AI Ultra subscribers can generate up to 1,000 Veo videos per month.

The avatar feature is the most notable addition. Users can now direct AI avatars through natural language prompts instructing them to interact with products, props, or equipment within a scene. Google says character consistency is maintained across dynamic outputs. Appearance, apparel, and backgrounds can all be customised through prompts.

Google also added direct YouTube export. Finished videos can be sent straight to a YouTube channel without downloading and re-uploading. All exported videos default to private, giving creators a review step before going public.

The screen recording Chrome extension rounds out the update, allowing users to capture their screen with audio or video and feed it directly into the google Vids workflow.

The update follows Google’s addition of Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro music generation models to Vids last month. Those models let users add AI-generated sound effects and background music to their clips. Together the features position Vids as a more complete end-to-end video production platform not just a slide-based video builder competing more directly with tools like Canva and Adobe Express.
