SAN FRANCISCO: Users of Anthropic’s AI-powered coding assistant, Claude Code, are reporting that they are hitting usage limits significantly faster than anticipated. Thereby leading to widespread frustration and disruption in their workflows.

The issue surfaced prominently on social media platforms and forums in late March and still continuing in Apr. This is prompting Anthropic to acknowledge the problem and investigate potential causes.

The problem, to be specific, began around March 23. Users on the Max 5x plan, costing USD 100 per month, reported draining their five-hour session limits in under 90 minutes. Some Max 20x subscribers at USD 200 per month hit their limits in as little as 19 minutes. The same workloads had run without issue for weeks prior.

Users took to platforms like GitHub and Reddit to voice their frustrations, criticizing Anthropic for its lack of clear communication. One user said, “It feels like we’re left in the dark about why this is happening. Our work is being disrupted without any explanation.”

Anthropic’s opaque pricing model has further intensified this frustration. The company does not publish a hard token limit for any plan. Instead, it markets the Max 20x plan as offering “20x Pro usage”, a relative multiplier rather than a concrete allocation. Without clear limits, developers cannot effectively plan or budget their work.

As dissatisfaction grows, Anthropic has begun investigating the issue. Early reports suggest that recent platform updates may have triggered the rapid exhaustion of Claude code quotas.

Anthropic is now examining potential bugs and system changes that may have increased token consumption. At the same time, the company is advising users to closely monitor their usage and adjust their consumption patterns accordingly.

As the situation develops, many users are seeking advice on how to manage their token consumption more effectively. Some have shared strategies online, such as implementing a “thinking vs. doing” rubric to optimize their coding tasks and reduce unnecessary token expenditure.

The crisis lands at a difficult moment. Anthropic is already dealing with fallout from the accidental Claude Code source code leak earlier this week. In response to which, OpenAI moved quickly, announcing unlimited access to Codex, its competing coding agent.

The ongoing issues with usage of claude code quota exhaustion limits, all in all, underscore the challenges faced by AI service providers in balancing user demand with system capabilities. As Anthropic works to resolve these concerns, users remain hopeful for a swift resolution that will restore normal functionality to the platform.
