New York: Google is moving forward with Android Halo, a new system-level feature designed to let users track what their AI agents are doing without interrupting whatever else they’re doing on their phone.

What Halo Does

Halo functions as a discreet status indicator, similar in spirit to how a notification dot works today. Instead of hiding an agent’s activity inside an app, Halo surfaces updates at the top of the phone screen, showing when an agent is working on a task, enters ‘live mode’, or sends a message. The idea is that users can glance at the top of any screen, in any app, to see what their AI assistant is up to, rather than having to switch apps or wait for a notification.

Google first previewed the feature at its I/O developer conference in May 2026. The visual cue shown at the event was minimal: a glowing circle in the corner of a Pixel’s status bar that morphs into the Gemini “sparkle” icon whenever an agent becomes active.

The Engine Behind It: Gemini Spark

Halo is the interface layer. The actual work is done by Gemini Spark, described by Google as a 24/7 personal AI agent built to help users navigate their digital lives and take actions on their behalf, under their direction.

Spark is designed to keep running even when a user’s laptop is closed or their phone is locked, since the agent operates on a remote virtual machine rather than the user’s own device. That means users do not need to keep a computer running around the clock to let an agent finish a task; they simply check in periodically through their phone via Halo.

At launch, Spark integrates with Google’s own productivity tools, including Gmail, Docs, and Slides. Google has said support for third party tools will expand through the Model Context Protocol (MCP) in the coming months. Under the hood, Spark runs on the Gemini 3.5 Flash model and is governed by Google’s “Antigravity” agent harness, which allows it to carry out multi-step, multi-app workflows, such as cross-referencing data across spreadsheets and documents, drafting an email, and scheduling a follow-up, all from a single instruction.

Rollout Timeline

Gemini Spark began rolling out in beta to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States shortly after its May unveiling. Android Halo itself is tied to the next major operating system release: Google says it will arrive with Android 17 later this year, with fuller implementation details expected around the company’s usual August hardware announcements.

Some reporting suggests an early version of Halo could debut alongside upcoming Pixel hardware, following the pattern of past device launches, though Google has not confirmed this directly.

Open Questions

Not everything about the rollout has gone smoothly. At least one report has noted that Gemini Spark remains unavailable in the UK and parts of Europe, pending a compliance review tied to the EU AI Act. Separate reporting, based on inspection of Google’s app code, has pointed to a more detailed internal dashboard than what Google has shown publicly, with task statuses such as “Running,” “Blocked, Needs Input,” and “Failed,” suggesting the consumer facing version of Halo may be a simplified front end for a more complex monitoring system underneath.

Google has framed Halo as a transparency tool, meant to build trust as AI agents take on more autonomous, background tasks such as scheduling appointments or handling routine payments. Whether users embrace that level of delegation, and how much they will want to see versus have hidden, is likely to become clearer once Halo reaches a wider rollout later this year.
